The Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering set up by the institute in 1976 under the Science and Technology plan of the government during the 5th plan period, has been active in contributing significantly towards the needs of developing and demonstrating the technology of satellite data utilization and development of Geographic Information Systems for natural resources identification, delineation, utilization and management. The Centre has successfully demonstrated the application potential of remote sensing technology in the programs of natural resources assessment for the identified geographical areas in the country and has also taken part along with other national agencies such as ISRO and NRSA in the programs of disaster mitigation like drought and flood. It has significantly contributed in the development of Geographic Information System technology by way of developing first indigenous low end GIS software package called GRAM++. The Centre has also developed mutually beneficial international collaborations to carry out contemporary research programs with Leeds University, UK, Miami and Minnesota Universities in USA, Melbourne University, Australia, Technical University of Budapest, Hungary and ITC, The Netherlands.
In the past, CSRE has organized about 150 short-term and long-term training programs and at present offers M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in 'Natural Resources Engineering'. Doctoral programme at the centre aims to develop highly qualified and trained manpower that is needed for the effective utilization of contemporary technologies as applied to Natural Resources and related areas.
The Centre also undertakes sponsored research and consultancy projects in hydro-meteorology, surface water resources and river water management, ground water resources, marine and coastal environment, agro-informatics and rural development, assessment and management of natural hazards and disasters such as droughts, desertification, landslides, avalanches, terrain evaluation and land-use monitoring and mineral resource exploration etc. Broad areas of research are as listed below
General guidelines laid down by the institute for Ph.D. admission will be followed. However, the field of Natural Resources Engineering is highly multi-disciplinary ranging from the evolutionary history of the earth, its geo-physical, geo-chemical and environmental aspects and related sciences of physics, chemistry, botanical sciences to the development and use of modern tools and techniques such as remote sensing and GIS for their exploration, and management as per the socio economic needs of the society. The list of related engineering field is also very wide ranging from earth sciences, civil engineering, computing and imaging and information sciences and engineering, environmental engineering, oceanography etc. There is also renewed emphasis worldwide on sustainable exploitation of natural resources. Hence, as such, it will not be prudent to restrict or exclude possibility of carrying out research on any aspects related to natural resources engineering. Hence it is proposed that the candidates with B.Tech./M.Tech. degree in any branch of Engineering and M.Sc. degree in any branch of Science or other disciplines covered by GATE ( Mathematics as subject up to 10+2 level) and relevant to research areas in Natural Resources Engineering at CSRE as detailed below may be considered for admission to the proposed Ph.D. program. Details of qualifying disciplines are given in appendix A.
